ONE Gospel

Last Thursday, students gathered for SPO New Jersey's monthly ONE Gospel event. Mission Leader Kimi Butler gave a talk about what it means to be on mission, and encouraged the students to share their faith with others.

"If we don't share our faith, who will?" she asked the group of about 40 students.

When we are passionate about something, we share it with others. Kimi showed this video of the cast from Lion King singing "The Circle of Life" on an airplane:

She pointed out how passionate each person is about their talents, and how they believe in what they are doing so much so that they want to share it with everyone else on the plane.

Unfortunately, we tend to shrink away from opportunities to share our faith. Taking excerpts from the wise mind of Ryan O'Hara, Kimi divulged three reasons why Catholics don't share their faith with others:

  1. We are afraid
  2. We are ashamed
  3. We don't really believe it's that important

Kimi ended the talk by reminding everyone of the call to evangelize, spoken by Pope Francis himself:

Christians have the duty to proclaim the Gospel without excluding anyone. Instead of seeming to impose new obligations, they should appear as people who wish to share their joy, who point to a horizon of beauty and who invite others to a delicious banquet. It is not by proselytizing [attempting to convert] that the Church grows, but ‘by attraction.’
— Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium
