Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all! What a blessing to have a day set aside by our country simply to give thanks for all the goodness we have received, whether it be large or small. I was personally surprised to read that Thanksgiving was indeed fully intended to give thanks to our Lord, as President Washington named Thanksgiving "a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God". Although many may not give thanks to God by name, all who give thanks ultimately offer gratitude to our Lord this day. Now, it is possible each of our homes on Thanksgiving day may not be the picture of perfection and love. As Rebecca Hamilton wrote in her post “The Only Life You Can Bring to Thanksgiving Dinner is the Messy One You’ve Got”, we bring the “messes we’ve made of our lives to the dinner table on Thanksgiving”. Although some messes may be larger than others, the fact remains each of us is bringing imperfections as we meet each other for a day we may strive to make “perfect”.

Let us see those imperfections in our loved ones, and in ourselves, on this day of thanks and say a hearty “THANK YOU” for God’s grace to love us despite our flaws. And what better day to look past one another’s flaws, and be thankful just to have loved ones in our lives. What a way to live! As one wise SPO staff member said: “This is my favorite holiday because this is how we should be all the time.”
