Sam first met Saint Paul's Outreach as a student at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. Growing up in Winsted, MN and attending Holy Trinity schools as the fifth boy of eight children with his parents active in the Pro-Life Movement, Sam had a solid foundation in his Catholic faith. But it was the witness and invitation from the men and women of SPO that showed him what it looked like to have your Catholic faith be alive.

It was during the summer of 2000, in the Jubilee year, when Sam’s life was forever changed by the life-changing power of the Gospel taking root in his life.  That summer, Saint Paul's Outerach offered a full time internship called S.I.P. (Summer Internship Program) where the interns spent the summer in formation: studying scripture and the Catechism, serving with various summer camps and youth outreaches, praying, learning to love and give the whole of your life for the rest of your life. This summer was the turning point of his life and he has not stopped working to share the gospel and spread the good news of the Kingdom of God ever since.

Sam is husband to Patricia (Rose) Schoenfelder and father to Sam Jr, Joe, John, Luke, Mark and his first daughter Maryam Rose!

Sam enjoys camping, fishing, hiking with his boys or anyone else.  He is most comfortable in the mountains, near a lake, jumping a stream, walking barefoot in the grass, climbing trees, or sitting by the fire. His favorite bible verse is Romans 12:1-2: "Therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, I urge you to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice to the Lord, holy and acceptable to him. Do not be conformed to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your minds, that you might know what is the good pleasing and perfect will of God."

Sam’s encouragement for all young people: Trust God radically with your lives, with your plans, with your money, with your future, with your relationships. Let us fall into the hands of God, for as great as is His majesty so is His mercy. God can be trusted. Oh what plans He has for those who love Him and set no limit to the hope they place in Him.
