Chapter: Florida State University
Sawyer was raised in Ham Lake, Minnesota, a small suburban town north of the Twin Cities. As a child he would go exploring in the woods in his yard, ride dirt bikes, play a plethora of sports, and sing along to nearly every song on the radio. Being raised by a beautiful mother and strong father, who taught him his dignity as a son of God, Sawyer learned to recognize the good in nearly everyone he met. Making his way through grade school and high school, Sawyer developed a strong trust and curiosity in Jesus Christ. To learn more about Jesus and the Catholic faith, Sawyer attended the University of St. Thomas.
While at St. Thomas, Sawyer found himself surrounded by incredible young men and women who were running after Jesus Christ with passion and zeal. He found it comforting to encounter people like himself, “normal” people with passions and hobbies who also desired to know and love God. These new friends led Sawyer to get involved with Campus Ministry at St. Thomas where he worked as a Peer Minister and as a Retreat Assistant. These jobs gave him a greater understanding of the life Jesus had for him: a life filled with wonder and awe in Jesus’ mighty work and healing. A life rooted and filled with love. A life surrendered to Jesus Christ.
During his junior year of college, Sawyer found Saint Paul’s Outreach (SPO) and lived in an SPO Men’s Household during his senior year. Sawyer graduated from St. Thomas in December 2016 with degrees in Justice & Peace Studies and Spanish Culture & Language. Following graduation, Sawyer began working as a Mission Leader for SPO at the University of St. Thomas and has since moved to Florida State University where he currently serves.
As a Mission Leader, Sawyer’s aim is to love and care for the people he encounters. He wants the love of Christ to radiate through him into others’ hearts that they may know that having a personal relationship with Jesus leads to a life filled with hope, love, freedom, and adventure.
“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” –John 17: 25-26
