Men's Discernment Retreat

Finals are over and it’s time for a break! Three men from the Men’s Household went on the Heart of Jesus discernment retreat this weekend. This retreat is held by the Dioceses of Austin and is targeted to college age men.  There were about 30 guys there with four awesome and holy priests. It was motivating to see how the Lord is moving and working in the hearts of men all across central Texas. We were able to spend the weekend in prayer and quiet contemplation, and heard inspiring talks on the beauty of the priesthood.

This semester has been great; the men in our Household have grown a lot. With the life skills we have learned in Households and the progress we have made in formation, we are different men. We have said it many times, “The walls of this house will not make you holy” and it’s true. What makes us holy is disciplined prayer, the sacraments, and choosing Jesus in our difficult moments. Without the SPO Missionaries that reached out and befriended us in the first place we wouldn’t have been on a retreat that weekend. This is our motivation for the change we want to see on our college campus and in our culture.

Saturday night we stayed up late and talked about the upcoming semester: “How can we do better? How can we bring God’s love to more people?” These questions sat with us as the retreat concluded the next day. If God is calling us to be priests then we should start acting like it. No matter where we go in our lives, the mercy of Christ is abounding, and we need to share it.
