What is a "Vocational Pause?"
First year missionaries are required to take a vocational pause during their first year. This means not moving forward in a deeper way in any vocational pursuits. Whether it be marriage or religious life, we ask you to focus your first year on seeking the Lord in a deeper way in the mission He has called you to. To be clear, we are not asking you to end anything, but simply to not take a step forward so you can give yourself to the mission.
"I’m taking a vocational pause because I want to be faithful to the next step the Lord is calling me to take. Initially I wanted to anticipate my vocation and step into it while starting mission, but the Lord showed me He wants me to be available to what’s in store now." Evan Markel, past Missionary
Wondering about benefits?
SPO offers all full-time employees the opportunity to enroll in our health plan. In addition, SPO currently covers the majority of the monthly premium. SPO also provides a Health Savings Account for those participating in the SPO sponsored group health plan and has traditionally contributed $500 per year for singles and $1,000 per year for married couples and families. After one year of service, Missionaries are eligible to participate in SPO’s 401k plan, which includes a fully vested 4% employer match*.
*These benefits are subject to change at the discretion of SPO Senior Leadership.
worried about moving?
As a missionary, you will be moving from your college campus to a new one for the mission! It is a way to give a total yes to the mission the Lord has called you to, as well as give a new perspective to where you will serve!"
"Being involved in SPO at Texas State for 4 years, I was scared to move to a new people. I feared that whatever community I would be sent to wouldn’t be as good. After moving to Kansas City, I’ve recognized that even though it’s a different people, it’s the same way of life. All it takes is choosing these new people and living deep relationship with them, and very quickly they become your people." Tara Pieprzica, past Missionary
why a two year commitment?
New Missionaries are asked to make a two year commitment with SPO. Committing to two years gives room for trust and relationships to grow with the students you will be serving.
"I said yes to serving two years because I fell in love with the mission of building community. I knew from my own experience that the blessings of community take two years to come to fruition, and if I was going to spend any portion of my life on full-time mission, I knew I had to say yes to two years." Scott Carney, past Missionary
doubting you have what it takes?
This is another common fear people have when discerning working for SPO. Am I good enough? The truth: The Lord does not call the equipped, He equips the called. Just look at the twelve apostles! They were just some ordinary guys who accomplished extraordinary things with the help of the Holy Spirit!
Worried about your family's thoughts?
Family is one of the most important things in people’s lives. The Lord can work in radical ways through your ‘yes’ to reach your family, even if they don’t initially understand your call.
"While my family was neither for nor against me applying to SPO, I was still very concerned with how they felt about me being called to serve. Through this concern I was able to ask for the Lord’s grace to witness to my family the work that the Lord was particularly doing in my life. My "yes" has allowed me to share of His glory with both my friends and family which led me to greater faith and trust in the Lord’s plan for my life." Brianna Celedon, past Missionary
concerned about getting a job after spo?
The experience you build up while working for SPO equips you with skills that other companies are searching for in an employee. Some of these skills include: project management, interpersonal skills, leadership and teamwork, and creative problem solving — just to name a few. In addition, the networking involved with mission work opens up many doors of future opportunity. Most importantly, if God is calling you to something, He is going to provide for you. His plan for you does not stop after two years. Trust in Him and His provision.
nervous about fundraising?
This is one of the biggest concerns for most people, so you are not alone. Fundraising is inviting family and friends into the mission of the Church with you. SPO provides excellent training for Missionaries to build a strong Missionary support team. Remember, the Lord has called you into this, and He will provide for your every need. You are not an exception to the Lord’s generosity!
"Coming into fundraising, there was a nervous excitement with not knowing how it would go. The Lord provided many people to support me and push me to fundraise well. Out of this, many relationships were made with other missionaries and supporters that remain strong and encourage me in the mission." Sam Magnotto, Missionary
